Computers and BYOD

As a part of the school’s commitment to provide a 21st century learning environment and to equip students with the necessary skills for life in a digital society, students are required to use their personally owned laptops to access the school’s network. The school’s BYOD program allows students to bring their own computing device (that meets the school’s specification requirements) to all of their classes and the devices are used every day.  Allowing Students to configure their device to meet their personal likes, individual learning style and move seamlessly between home and school.

Device selection
Before acquiring a device to use at school read the Acceptable Usage Agreement for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) & ICT Facilities and Devices BYOD + ICT agreement (PDF, 460KB) for information about:
School, student and parent responsibilities
Acceptable use
Device specifications and software requirements

Warranty and accidental damage protection
Laptops are expensive technical devices and they do break down and can be damaged, especially in the hands of teenagers. It is vital to ensure a fast turnaround for repairs when the need arises.
We highly recommend every device has Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance with Next Business Day (NBD) warranty. You may have the option of adding ADP to your home and contents insurance policy. However, be sure that it covers the device 24/7 and while away from your home.

Help and support
The school offers first-level diagnostic support for student owned laptops at our ICT help desk.   However, warranty, security, insurance and maintenance is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.  Students are able to get IT support for their device from 8:30am in the morning and at first break in the technical room (located in the Communication Block).

Backup your device and USB Devices
Students are responsible for the security of their data, use a backup program to ensure data (including assignments, homework and images) are not lost.
PC Devices can use a program like Create Synchronicity or any other backup software of your choice that allows for incremental backup (saves time by only backing up new or changed files).
Mac Devices can use Time Machine (already installed on all Mac Devices)

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Student Advantage allows students with BYOD to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 of their BYODs. Click here to download your copy of Microsoft Office. Students need to sign into this page with their school email address and password.

Virus Protection
The installation of anti-virus software is a compulsory requirement. Norton are offering Norton Security with Backup at a special discount for students of the Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment. Click here for the link.
